The UK government’s recent immigration white paper outlines reforms that could significantly disrupt the construction sector, write Manager Kirsty Moore and Trainee Solicitor Christina Azntaridou in an article published in Construction Management.
The proposed shift to a contribution-based system raises skill and salary thresholds, introduces stricter visa and settlement rules and replaces the immigration salary list with a temporary shortage list. Roles such as bricklayers and roofers may no longer qualify under the skilled worker route, adding pressure to an already strained labour market. Kirsty and Christina urge employers to stay informed, reassess recruitment strategies and prepare for increased costs and compliance demands.
