Moving to Costa Rica? Visa and Residency Options Explained
October 19, 2026
Costa Rica continues to attract foreign nationals seeking opportunities to work remotely, retire abroad or establish a longer-term presence through investment. However, identifying the appropriate immigration pathway depends on an individual's income sources, financial circumstances and long-term plans.
In this video, Senior Immigration Program Manager Ana Carro explains Costa Rica's main immigration pathways, including key eligibility requirements and financial considerations, for digital nomads, retirees, individuals with stable income, and investors.
What Immigration Options Are Available in Costa Rica?
Costa Rica offers several immigration pathways designed to accommodate different personal and financial circumstances. These include options for individuals earning income remotely from abroad, retirees receiving pension income, individuals with stable income sources and those seeking residency through investment.
Understanding the differences between these categories can help individuals determine which option may be appropriate for their circumstances.
Costa Rica's Main Immigration Pathways
In the video, Ana highlights four options for individuals considering a move to Costa Rica:
-
-
-
Digital Nomad Visa: Designed for foreign nationals earning income from outside Costa Rica, this option allows eligible individuals to stay for up to one year, with the possibility of renewing for an additional year. Applicants must demonstrate monthly income of at least $3,000, or $4,000 if applying with dependents, along with private health insurance and standard background documentation.
-
Retirement Residency: Available to qualifying retirees who receive at least $1,000 per month in lifetime pension income from abroad. This permit is renewable for two-year periods and allows residents to live legally in Costa Rica and enroll in the country's public healthcare system. Foreign pension income is not subject to Costa Rican income tax, providing additional financial predictability for retirees.
-
Fixed Income Earner Residency: Intended for individuals who do not receive a traditional pension but can demonstrate consistent income. This category requires demonstrating $2,500 in income over a two-year period and offers another residency option for individuals with stable income sources.
-
Investor Residency: Available to individuals making a qualifying investment of at least $150,000 in Costa Rica, including certain real estate purchases or investments in Costa Rican businesses. With continued compliance and residence in the country, this pathway may lead to permanent residency.

Ana also explains how financial requirements, an individual's income structure and long-term plans can influence which immigration pathway may be most appropriate.
Choosing the Right Immigration Pathway
While Costa Rica offers several options for foreign nationals, each category has distinct eligibility requirements and financial considerations.
