Congratulations to Barbara Camacho, Fragomen’s Pro Bono Counsel, for being named a recipient of the NYC Mayoral Service Recognition Award. The Mayoral Recognition program honors volunteers and board members who contribute 100 or more hours of volunteer service to NYC organizations.
Barbara was honored for her work at Safe Passage Project (SPP), where she volunteered at screening clinics and led Fragomen’s recruitment of volunteer attorneys.
Since 2015, more than 70 Fragomen attorneys have volunteered in SPP clinics. Through SPP, Barbara has represented several children and juvenile cases and supervised many cases colleagues have undertaken for full representation.
Reflecting upon her experience, Barbara explains that Safe Passage offers attorneys a distinct opportunity to have a positive impact on a young person's life, noting, "When you help a child who was abandoned or a teenager who has survived the unimaginable to reach stability and permanency, it is a remarkable feeling and one that I hope every lawyer gets the chance to experience."
