Hungary: Immigration Authorities Require Foreign Nationals on Parental Leave to Change to Non-Work Permit
December 10, 2025
The Hungarian immigration authority (OIF) has announced that work permit holders who either are, or will be going on, unpaid maternity or paternity leave (regardless of its length) must change to a non-work based permit (for example, family reunification) if no actual work is being performed during the leave period (with limited exceptions). As a result, affected foreign nationals may need to consider a change in permit status, or confer with their immigration professional about alternative options.
