Ireland: Prompt Residence Permit Renewal Necessary to Ensure Christmas Travel

The situation

Non-European Economic Area nationals intending to travel over the Christmas period and who require an Irish Residence Permit (IRP) card to re-enter Ireland must submit their application for an IRP card by October 31, 2025, to ensure they receive their new IRP card in time to travel.

A closer look

Due to a processing backlog, it may take three to four weeks for an application to be processed, followed by an additional two weeks for delivery of the IRP card.

Impact

• Visa required nationals. This issue tends to mainly affect visa required nationals, as the IRP card acts as a re-entry permission.
• Preemptive applications. Employers should ensure submission of IRP renewals by this deadline to avoid any risk of expiration over the Christmas period. Businesses should anticipate employee questions on IRP processing times as well as the possibility of employee requests for applications to be submitted early. A review of upcoming employee expirations and planned leave/travel may assist in determining whether to file those applications early.
