About Ireland
Whether your company is sending employees to Ireland or expanding your worldwide footprint—Fragomen is here to help. Our experienced immigration professionals partner with businesses of all sizes to develop immigration strategies that can help you achieve your goals.
- The Irish immigration system provides several options for employers of foreign nationals. Ireland is a member state of the European Union (EU) and European Economic Area (EEA), but not the Schengen Area. Requirements, processing times and benefits for accompanying family members vary depending on the type of work authorization.
- Business visitors to Ireland typically use a business visa, unless they are visa exempt based on nationality. While business visits are legally allowed for up to 90 days, currently any trip over 14 days is subject to detailed scrutiny and may not be accepted. The duration of stay should be in line with the return flight itinerary and planned activities. At the discretion of the immigration authorities, business visitors may conduct work-related activities for up to 14 consecutive calendar days without obtaining work authorization in advance. However, it is recommended this be done no more than once per three-month period.
- The most common work authorization types are the Critical Skills Employment Permit (CSEP) for skilled workers hired under a local contract that lasts at least two years; and the Intracompany Transfer (ICT) Permit for transfers of senior managers, key personnel, or trainees for up to five years (or one year for trainees). The Atypical Working Scheme (AWS) is available for short-term work assignments of up to 90 calendar days spread over a six-month period with a strong business need. After these six months, foreign nationals must wait at least one month to commence a new AWS permission.
Fragomen can also consult on citizenship matters and, as permitted within the confines of local law, may be able to offer citizenship assistance.
