The New Zealand government has announced that the new Parent Boost Visitor Visa will open September 29, 2025. This visa will allow parents of New Zealand citizens and residents to stay in New Zealand for up to five years, with unlimited entries and an option to apply for a second five-year visa, allowing a total stay of up to 10 years. To qualify, applicants must be outside New Zealand both when applying and when the visa is granted. They must meet health and character requirements, be sponsored by an adult child who is a New Zealand citizen or resident, and demonstrate sufficient financial means to support their stay or show that their sponsor meets the income threshold. Applicants must also be genuine visitors, able to prove they will maintain strong ties to their home country. Notably, parents with dependent children will not be eligible.
Successful applicants will first receive an approval in principle and will then be required to provide evidence of 12 months’ acceptable insurance coverage. Once the visa is granted, applicants must enter New Zealand within six months. The five-year stay period will begin on the date of first arrival. A compliance check will be required between the third and fourth year of the visa. At that point, applicants must depart New Zealand, submit a new medical certificate, and provide evidence that acceptable insurance was continuously maintained.
