Nicaragua: Visa Categories Restructured; Visa-Free Access Affected for Many Nationals

Nicaragua has significantly restructured its visa framework, introducing a revised classification system and expanding prior authorization requirements for many nationalities. Under the new structure, entry categories are now divided into Category A (visa-exempt) and Category C (Consulted Visa required). As part of this reorganization, visa-free entry has been revoked for nationals of 128 countries, who must now obtain a Category C Consulted Visa prior to traveling to Nicaragua for tourism or business. Category C visas require prior authorization from the Nicaraguan Immigration Department before issuance by a Nicaraguan consulate. Processing typically takes approximately 30 days, though longer adjudication periods are possible. Approved visas generally permit an initial stay of up to 90 days.
As part of this restructure, at least nine nationalities were reclassified from visa-required to visa-exempt (Category A) status.
The full revised list of visa classifications is available here. Exceptions continue to apply to travelers holding diplomatic, official, service, public affairs or special passports, where valid bilateral agreements with Nicaragua provide for visa exemptions.
