Many people considering Swiss citizenship focus first on meeting the 10-year residence requirement. For ordinary naturalisation, however, residence is only one part of determining whether an applicant is ready to apply.

The standard route is generally available to foreign nationals who have lived in Switzerland for at least 10 years and hold a C permit at the time of application. Applicants must also demonstrate their integration into Swiss life, including meeting language requirements and showing knowledge of Switzerland and their local community.
