Adding a partner and two children can increase upfront costs to £30,000. Researchers, employers and industry groups raise concerns that high visa and healthcare surcharge fees are making it more difficult to attract scientists and engineers from abroad. Louise notes that sectors such as engineering have been especially affected, as the increased salary threshold puts pressure on businesses outside London with lower average pay.
The UK government has commissioned a review of labour shortages across key sectors including STEM and is expected to set out further immigration policy plans in an upcoming paper.
