Sweden: Mandatory Health Insurance Requirement for Certain Foreign Nationals Forthcoming

Effective June 1, 2026, foreign nationals granted a residence permit valid for up to one year must demonstrate comprehensive health insurance coverage as part of the work permit application process. While individuals staying in Sweden for shorter periods have historically lacked access to the public healthcare system and therefore required private insurance in practice, this reform introduces a clear statutory requirement and documentary obligation. The change aligns work permit rules with other permit categories and is expected to increase application preparation time and costs.
