Switzerland’s referendum on whether to cap the country’s population at 10 million sparked debate surrounding the impact of population growth and immigration, with supporters citing concerns about pressure on housing, infrastructure and public services, and opponents warning the measure could harm economic growth, worsen labor shortages and jeopardize relations with the EU. Swiss voters ultimately rejected the proposal, preserving existing immigration policies and Switzerland’s free movement arrangements with the EU.

In thisThe ABC article, Senior Counsel Dr. Anna Boucher provides context on the demographic and economic implications of the proposal, explaining that immigration helps offset the challenges of an aging population and declining birth rates across Western countries by sustaining the workforce and tax base needed to support social welfare systems. Anna also notes that a constitutionally mandated population cap could prove difficult to implement in practice, suggesting it may function more as a political statement than a workable policy tool, a perspective that proved particularly relevant given the proposal’s rejection by Swiss voters on June 14, 2026.
