In an article published in The PIE, Partner Aaron Blumberg said the Trump administration’s proposal to impose fixed time limits on student visas would create challenges for international students and increase pressure on government systems. While the full rule isn’t yet public, Aaron expects it to mirror a 2020 version that capped visas at two or four years based on country of origin. As most students take longer to finish their degrees, many would need to file for extensions.
Aaron also said the rule could complicate Optional Practical Training, adding legal costs and risks that may affect students’ status. The added steps, particularly for younger students, could significantly increase the volume of applications USCIS must process and impact the overall student experience in the US.
