Canada’s federal immigration department is set to cut 3,300 jobs—more than 20% of its workforce—raising concerns about worsening backlogs and processing delays. Partner Rick Lamanna shared with the Toronto Star that while staff reductions might slow application processing, the volume of applications will remain constant. He emphasized the importance of managing expectations, suggesting applicants prepare for potential delays. These cuts coincide with a federal plan to lower immigration levels over the next three years and reduce spending to pre-pandemic levels.
