What Is ESTA? Five Common Mistakes to Avoid When Traveling to the US
October 14, 2026
Traveling to the United States under the Visa Waiver Program can be relatively straightforward for eligible travelers, but misunderstandings about the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) requirements can lead to complications before departure, or at the US border.
In this video, Partner Emily Allen explains what ESTA is, who may be eligible to use it, and five common mistakes travelers should avoid when visiting the United States for business or tourism
What is ESTA?
ESTA is a travel authorization available to eligible travelers under the US Visa Waiver Program. It allows citizens of participating countries to travel to the United States for short stays involving tourism or certain business activities, without first obtaining a visa.
However, ESTA is not a visa, and an approved authorization does not guarantee admission to the United States. Final admission decisions are made by US Customs and Border Protection officers at the port of entry.
Five Common ESTA Mistakes to Avoid
In the video, Emily highlights five common mistakes that can create unnecessary complications for travelers:
-
-
-
Assuming everyone qualifies for ESTA: Eligibility depends on factors including nationality, travel history and individual circumstances. Some travelers may require a visa even if they are citizens of a Visa Waiver Program country.
-
Waiting until the last minute to apply: ESTA approvals are often processed quickly, but delays can occur. Applying well in advance can help prevent travel disruptions.
-
Confusing business travel with work authorization: ESTA may permit certain business activities, including meetings, conferences and negotiations, but it does not authorize employment in the United States.
-
Entering incorrect or outdated information: Errors in passport details or personal information can cause complications. Travelers should also consider whether a new passport affects an existing authorization.
-
Assuming ESTA guarantees entry: An approved ESTA allows eligible travelers to travel to the United States and request admission, but border officials make the final determination.

Emily also shares an additional tip on the importance of using trusted resources when applying for ESTA, particularly when encountering third-party websites offering application assistance.
