About Italy
Whether you’re looking to visit, live or work in Italy—we can support your immigration needs at every stage of your journey.
Italy is a member of the European Union and the Schengen Area. If you’re a foreign national looking to visit, live, and/or work in Italy, several options are available.
- Business Visits: As a business visitor and depending on your citizenship, you'll generally enter Italy without a visa or need to secure a Schengen C Visa from an Italian consular post before your travel. For all visitors, the Schengen Area limits stays to 90 days in a 180-day period.
- Work Authorization: The main work authorization categories are (1) Intracompany Transfer Work Permit and Permit of Stay, for intracompany transfers of highly skilled personnel under the national permit scheme; (2) EU Intracompany Transferee (ICT) Permit, for intracompany transfers of managers, specialists, and trainees under the EU permit scheme, which offers intra-EU mobility; and (3) the EU Blue Card, for highly skilled local hires.
- Internships/Traineeships: If you're traveling to Italy as an intracompany trainee, the EU Intracompany Transferee (ICT) Permit may be suitable. It generally authorizes traineeships of up to one year and can be extended up to one year. To qualify, you'll need to hold a higher education degree and have been continuously employed as part of the same corporate group for at least three months.
- Self-employment: If you're a potential investor or entrepreneur, Italy offers a two-year investor visa based on a sizeable investment in government bonds, company equity, or philanthropy; a freelance permit if you're already a successful freelancer when applying; or a start-up permit if you have an innovative business idea and EUR 50,000 in investment funds. Italy also offers a program for digital nomads, which allows foreign nationals as freelancers or a foreign employer) to perform highly skilled work remotely from Italy for up to twelve months (renewable each year if eligibility conditions continue to be met).
Fragomen can also consult on citizenship matters and, as permitted within the confines of local law, may be able to offer citizenship assistance.
