About Portugal
Whether you’re looking to visit, live or work in Portugal—we can support your immigration needs at every stage of your journey.
Portugal is a member of the European Union and the Schengen Area. If you’re a foreign national looking to visit, live, and/or work in Portugal, several options are available.
- Business Visits: As a business visitor and depending on your citizenship, you'll generally enter Portugal without a visa or you'll need to secure a Schengen C Visa from a Portuguese consular post before your travel. The Schengen Area limits stays to 90 days in a 180-day period.
- Work Authorization: The main work authorization categories are the Temporary Stay visa, suitable for short-term work activities; and the Residence Visa, for highly qualified staff and local hires.
- Internships/Traineeships: Trainees can obtain a one-year temporary stay visa or a residence visa for a longer stay. To qualify, you will need a trainee contract with a local sponsor, among other requirements.
- Self-sponsored: There are work authorization programs for potential investors or entrepreneurs in Portugal. The investor visa ('golden visa') is self-sponsored and permits work. To qualify, you'll need to meet the minimum required investment in certified projects, research activities, company share capital, or investment funds (not real estate), or intend to create a new company with 10 permanent employees based in Portugal. Portugal also allows remote workers to apply for a Remote Work Residence Visa based on (self-)employment abroad, based on sufficient income and suitable residence in Portugal. Successful applicants receive a visa for 120 days of cumulative stay and two entries; renewable for a further 90 days. Portugal also has a D2 visa for entrepreneurs, freelancers, and independent service providers who want to establish a business in Portugal. Financial requirements are lower than for the 'golden visa' but you'll need to have a business plan that benefits the Portuguese economy. Portugal also offers a D7 visa for those with sufficient "passive income" from investment, real estate, or retirement funds.
Fragomen can also consult on citizenship matters and, as permitted within the confines of local law, may be able to offer citizenship assistance.
