If you’re a foreign national looking to visit, live, and/or work in Uruguay, several options are available.
- Business Visits: Requirements for business visitors vary depending on your citizenship. Visa-exempt nationals can enter Uruguay as tourists (Non-Residents) and carry out business activities for up to 90 days, generally limited to attending meetings, seminars, conferences/courses, making sales calls, exploring business opportunities, and attending or receiving training. Visa nationals must obtain a consular visa to enter Uruguay.
- Work Authorization: Uruguay has two main categories: (1) Temporary Residence allows work for two years and can be extended once for an additional two years; (2) Permanent Residence allows for work beyond four years. Foreign nationals are issued Provisional Identity Cards to conduct short-term work in Uruguay for 180 days (renewable once). The Provisional Identity Card allows you to work remotely from Uruguay for your foreign employer or company.
- Internships/Traineeships: There is no trainee-specific work authorization category in Uruguay.
- Self-employment: Uruguay has no dedicated work authorization programs for potential investors or entrepreneurs. However, you may be eligible for permanent residence if you demonstrate sufficient economic means to support yourself during your stay, among other eligibility criteria.
