While business travel may appear straightforward, Swiss immigration requirements are primarily determined by the nature of the activities performed, rather than the length of stay. Activities such as attending meetings, conferences and general discussions are typically permitted under business visitor status.
However, risks arise when activities extend beyond these parameters.

- Delivering services or running training sessions
- Actively contributing to projects

These types of activities may require work authorization—even if the trip was initially planned as a short business visit.
Mihaela also highlights a common challenge: business trips often evolve once employees are on the ground. While this may be operationally necessary, it can create compliance risks if activities shift beyond what is permitted under visitor status.
Importantly, entry status—whether visa-free or under a Schengen visa—does not determine what activities are allowed. Swiss authorities increasingly assess the substance of the work performed, rather than how the trip is categorized.
A proactive approach is critical. Employers should assess planned activities in advance, identify potential risks and ensure appropriate authorization is in place before travel.
