
Individuals residing and working outside of Dublin are now required to visit their local GNIB office twice: once to register and a second time to collect their registration card. There are no other changes in registration application procedures.
Previously, local GNIB offices were responsible for processing registration card applications and issuance. Applicants could often obtain their registration card immediately after completing the registration process at the local GNIB office. Under the new process, registration cards are printed and issued in batches by the Dublin GNIB offices.
What This Means for Employers and Foreign Nationals
A valid GNIB registration card is required to apply for a reentry visa for overseas travel, and is used as additional documentary evidence of immigration status by Irish immigration officials at the ports of entry.
Foreign nationals who will reside outside of Dublin should generally add two to three weeks to the time they plan for the registration card process. Registration card renewals should be filed well enough in advance to account for the new procedures, particularly where individuals have upcoming overseas travel plans.
