By: Rachel Beardsley
Partner Rachel Beardsley shares the extraordinary story of assisting an Afghan interpreter and his family in fleeing Kabul, published by City Bar Justice Center.
After the US withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021, the Taliban targeted Afghans who had worked for the US military, including "Mohammad," a translator whose vital interpreter services put him and his family in grave danger. Forced into hiding and separated from his loved ones, Mohammad struggled to survive while awaiting uncertain news about his Special Immigrant Visa application that would allow him to move to safety in the US.
Over the course of three years, Rachel and her team navigated an array of challenges to secure the familyโs safe evacuation and immigration to the US. The family ultimately settled in Chicago, where they began building a new life with the support of many in the community.
In this piece, Rachel reflects on the resilience of Mohammad and his family and highlights the urgent need for continued advocacy for Afghans in similar situations.

Pro bono cases, especially immigration-related ones, often leave a lasting impact on me. One case in particular that spanned three continents over three years is among the most significant of my career.
