Degree equivalency is an important part of the United Arab Emirates’ (UAE) educational and professional systems. The process evaluates qualifications earned from international institutions against the country’s recognized academic standards. It allows individuals to pursue employment, licensing and educational opportunities.   

The Shift to Mandatory Degree Equivalency in the UAE  

As the UAE’s workforce and educational landscape have become more international, degree equivalency has taken on a greater role. For many years, employers and educational institutions in the UAE recognized foreign degrees on a more informal basis. Authorities have identified the need for a standardized approach as higher education becomes more diverse and international talent increases. Therefore, degree equivalency becomes mandatory for processes such as higher education admissions, professional licensing, job title changes and golden visa applications.   

 The process is now streamlined, clearly defined and formalized, building on requirements that existed previously. This approach maintains high educational and professional standards while recognizing international qualifications.   

 Why Degree Equivalency Is Required in the UAE  

Degree equivalency plays an important role by serving several key functions. It ensures that academic qualifications obtained abroad meet the country’s required standards, helping protect both employers and the workforce by confirming that individuals possess appropriate credentials for their role. Degree equivalency in the UAE is required to meet regulatory and employment requirements, including:  

      • Validates professional expertise: In fields such as healthcare, law, engineering, and education, qualifications must meet specific standards to ensure that professionals are fully qualified to practice in the UAE. Degree equivalency allows local regulators and employers to verify that foreign degree is recognized and meet local standards.  
      • Ensures fairness in employment and education: Degree equivalency promotes fairness by ensuring that academic credentials are evaluated on the same basis. This helps attract and retain top talent from across the globe and ensures that local professionals can compete internationally.  
      • Enables professional licensing: Many professionals in the UAE must obtain licenses from local authorities in fields like healthcare, engineering, and education. Degree equivalency is a key part of this process because it confirms that an individual’s qualifications meet the necessary standards.  

Why Degree Equivalency Timelines Can Vary 

The timelines for degree equivalency can vary based on several factors:  

      • Volume of applications: Application volume submitted to the Ministry of Education (MOE) can influence processing times, during peak periods.  
      • Degree complexity: Degrees from certain countries or fields may require more detailed review, particularly if they are from institutions with non-standard curricula or accreditation status.  
      • Document verification: The time required to verify documents, including translations, official certifications, and the recognition of foreign institutions, can affect the overall timeline.  

Professionals should plan and submit their documentation early in case the equivalency is required.  

Who Verifies Degree Equivalency in the UAE 

In the UAE, MOE verifies degree equivalency. They assess whether an individual’s foreign qualification meets national academic and regulatory standards. For certain professions, additional authorities or regulatory bodies may also be involved, including:   

      • Health authorities responsible for medical degrees recognition and healthcare professional licensing 
      • Relevant engineering bodies involved in assessing engineering qualifications  
      • National Qualifications Authority (NQA) for national qualifications frameworks and higher education credential recognition  

These bodies coordinate to ensure qualifications meet national education and professional competency requirements. Each authority applies its own criteria, resulting in varying timelines and additional steps in the process.

The university degree equivalency process in the UAE plays a vital role in maintaining the integrity and competitiveness of the workforce. This process aligns foreign academic credentials with UAE standards, safeguarding professional competence and ensuring that only qualified individuals enter the job market or higher education system.
