Fragomen Partner Sarah Peterson will participate on a panel during "The Conrad 30 Program Turns 30!" event in Washington, DC on Wednesday, May 8, hosted by Foley Hoag. The program, a celebration of strengthening access to health care in underserved communities, will take place from 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm EDT.
About the Program:
Authorized in 1994, the Conrad 30 waiver program incentivizes international medical graduates (IMG) who complete their residency in the United States to practice in rural and underserved areas that struggle to recruit and retain physicians. Upon completion of their residency program, all IMGs that come to the U.S. on a J-1 visa are required to return to their home country for two years before applying for another visa or green card. The Conrad J-1 waiver program grants each state up to 30 waivers to issue to IMGs to waive the two-year foreign residency requirement if they commit to practicing in a health professional shortage or medically underserved area for at least three years. Over the last 30 years, the Conrad program has facilitated the placement of approximately 20,000 physicians in rural and underserved areas, making an immeasurable difference to the communities they serve and increasing access to health care across the U.S.
This Congressional briefing will provide an overview of the Conrad 30 program from the various perspectives of stakeholders including a physician who has participated in the program, an expert who files waivers and works with employers on recruitment and retention strategies, a state Conrad 30 program administrator, and national physician stakeholder groups.
