The situation
In Kazakhstan, visa reference number application deadlines have been shortened, while work extension applications can be applied for further in advance of the visa's expiry date. Additionally, foreign nationals can now apply for Kazakhstani visas at consulates of countries in which they have business, work or investor visas.
A closer look
- Visa reference number applications. The deadline for a visa reference number application has been shortened to five business days prior to a foreign national’s arrival in Kazakhstan. Previously, the deadline was 14 calendar days prior to arrival.
- Impact. Foreign nationals applying for visa reference numbers will not have to plan their travels to Kazakhstan as far in advance. Fragomen’s assistance should however still be initiated sufficiently in advance to allow for time for document collection and governmental fee payment.
- Background. Visa applicants must apply for a visa reference number from the Migration Police in Kazakhstan prior to applying for their visa at a consulate.
- Work visa extension applications. Foreign nationals can apply for work visa extensions up to 30 calendar days before their visa expiry date. Previously, they could only apply up to 14 calendar days in advance.
- Impact. Foreign nationals will have more time to file their work visa extension applications, increasing the probability of filing extension applications in-country as opposed to travelling abroad. Work visa reference number procurement for the extension application will still be required.
- Visa application locations expanded. Foreign nationals can now apply for Kazakhstani visas in countries where they have business, work or investor visas. Previously, foreign nationals could only apply in countries where they held citizenship or permanent residence.
- Impact. Foreign nationals working under temporary visas in third countries will not have to travel to apply for Kazakhstani visas.
