Senior Counsel Scott Cooper, speaking to Business Standard, noted that dissolving the Department of Education could have indirect lasting consequences for international students and US industries reliant on them like tech, healthcare and other research-driven fields.
He explained ways in which international students contribute to the US economy and innovation through their roles as research assistants, teaching assistants and other critical positions—opportunities that will likely decrease as a result of research funding cuts.
Scott also said that heightened visa scrutiny under the the new administration is discouraging students from choosing the US as a study destination, leading to a shift in talent movement to other countries such as Canada, Australia and the UK.
