Canada: New Streams and Stricter Language Requirements under the British Columbia Provincial Nominee Program Forthcoming
March 22, 2024

The province of British Columbia will be updating the British Columbia Provincial Nominee Program selection criteria in January 2025, to strengthen the province’s economy and support international workers and students. The changes will include three new immigration streams that will replace the current International Graduate and International Post-Graduate streams; the Bachelor’s stream will be intended for recent graduates with bachelor’s degrees from eligible post-secondary institutions and a full-time job offer; the Master’s Stream will be intended for recent graduates with master’s degrees from eligible post-secondary institutions, in any field of study, with a minimum one-year full-time job offer; and the Doctorate stream will be intended for graduates and candidates of PhD programs from eligible post-secondary institutions. Furthermore, the province will increase language requirements for most streams (a minimum of Canadian Language Benchmark level 8 is planned for the new graduate streams, whereas currently, levels vary by occupation/category but are typically lower). The province will also continue to prioritize invitations to apply, for residence candidates with a job offer in a priority occupation such as healthcare, construction and early childhood education. According to the government, a detailed summary of the updates will be available in late 2024. We will report on relevant developments.
