Finland: New End-of-Employment Notification Rule and New Job-Seeking Deadline
June 11, 2025
Finnish employers must now inform the Finnish Immigration Service (Migri) within 14 days of a foreign employee with a work-based residence permit ending their employment prematurely, via the Enter Finland e-service. Previously, employers were encouraged to inform Migri of changes in employment status, but no legal obligation existed. Responsibility for reporting job loss primarily fell on the employee. The new requirement does not extend to casual or temporary work that is supplementary to the primary job. Those who fail to notify authorities are subject to fines.
Also, individuals with work-based residence permits must secure new employment within three months of job loss to maintain their residence status. Certain categories of workers, such as specialists, EU Blue Card holders, and those who have resided in Finland for over two years on a work-based permit, are granted a six-month period to find new employment.
