The situation
Austria and Germany have announced that they will conduct increased border checks at their mutual border.
A closer look
The increased border inspections are scheduled to last for at least three months, starting June 1, 2018. Checks involve both German and Austrian federal police and regional police from the German state of Bavaria.
Authorities have announced that the checks will primarily focus on freight trains, but increased inspections are expected at all border crossings.
Impact
Travelers can expect longer waiting periods at land border crossings and inspections on train lines between Austria and Germany.
Looking ahead
Travelers are always advised to carry valid passports and permits.
Foreign nationals with a pending renewal applications where their permit is due to expire shortly are advised to request an interim permit in a timely manner. Please contact your Fragomen professional for further support.
