- The Austrian immigration system provides several options for employers of foreign nationals. Austria is a member of the European Union and the Schengen Area. Requirements, processing times, employment eligibility and benefits for accompanying family members vary by the immigration category.
- Business visitors to Austria typically use a local version of the Schengen C Visa unless they are visa exempt based on nationality. The Schengen Area limits stays to 90 days in a 180-day period. However, business visits to Austria must be limited to three to four cumulative business days unless exemptions apply under a multilateral trade and cooperation agreement (i.e., EU-Canada CETA, EU-UK TCA, EU-Japan EPA).
- The main work authorization types in Austria are:
(1) Short-Term Work Authorization for stays of up to six months.
(2) The EU Blue Card is for highly skilled local hires who meet a high salary threshold.
(3) The Red-White-Red Card for locally hired key personnel with long-term accommodation.
(4) The EU Intracompany Transferee (ICT) Permit for intracompany transfers of managers, specialists, and trainees.
