Minimum Salary Increased for Employees of Multimedia Super Corridor-Malaysia Companies With Dependents
January 7, 2015
Effective immediately, the minimum monthly salary for Employment Pass holders working for Multimedia Super Corridor-Malaysia-status companies in West Malaysia has increased to RM 5,000 per month for those with dependents who require Dependants' Passes or Long Term Visit Passes (Social), according to an announcement by the eXpat Centre of Multimedia Development Corporation Sdn Bhd (MDeC).
The new requirement is RM 5,000 per month for those with dependents who require Dependants' Passes or Long Term Visit Passes (Social). The minimum salary for those without dependents remains at RM 2,500 per month.
Affected foreign nationals and their dependents will not be able to renew their existing passes if the employer does not comply with the new minimum salary requirement.
Pending initial and renewal applications of affected foreign nationals are currently on hold with MDeC until a potential review of the new requirement is conducted.
What This Means for Employers and Foreign Nationals
Until further information is available, employers seeking to hire affected foreign nationals are advised to either only hire foreign nationals who meet the minimum salary requirement or to comply with the minimum salary requirement.
Employers that cannot comply with the new minimum salary requirement are advised to apply for Employment Passes for the employee and advise dependents seeking renewals to leave Malaysia before their passes expire to avoid overstay fines.
Affected foreign nationals with school-age children may be able to apply for Students’ Passes for their children and Long Term Visit Passes (Social) for the accompanying spouse and children who are not of school-age.
Affected foreign nationals should consult their immigration professional to determine the best option.
