The situation
A new electronic system in Argentina is expected to simplify many immigration processes, beginning with Mercosur visa applications, on September 1, 2018.
A closer look
- Electronic user code. The Financial Information Unit has adopted a new electronic user code that provides foreign nationals online access to submit and track their visa applications. Foreign nationals will obtain their electronic user code in person or through their immigration services provider at a Financial Information Unit office.
- Mercosur applications. In-country Mercosur visa applicants will be able to submit their applications electronically using their electronic code on or after September 1, 2018 by following the below steps:
- Create a login and password using the electronic user code;
- Upload personal information and copies of original documents. Upon submission, an immigration official will review the application materials and grant an appointment for biometrics;
- Attend the biometrics appointment in person;
- Visa approval should be granted within a few days of the biometrics appointment;
- Upon approval, the local identification card (DNI) will be mailed to the address provided in the application.
Impact to foreign nationals
Eligible foreign nationals will see simpler visa application processes that requires fewer personal appearances and processing times reduced from several months to a few days.
Looking ahead
As an extension of this program, Fragomen expects that a broader electronic visa system will be created in the future.
