New Zealand: Median Wage Increased for AEVW Program and AEWV-linked Visas

The situation
Effective March 9, 2026, the median wage will increase to NZD 35 per hour, resulting in increased immigration settings indexed to the median wage for foreign nationals in the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEVW) program and AEWV-linked visas.
A closer look
Immigration settings which will be affected by the median wage increase include:

- Green List salary thresholds;
- Exemptions from advertising and minimum skill requirements for roles paid at least twice the median wage;
- Eligibility for the maximum five-year stay for certain lower-skilled roles paid at least 1.5 times the median wage; and
- Income thresholds for supporting partners and dependent children.

Employers should be aware that these indexed increases will affect eligibility criteria for the visas and may need to review current and planned recruitment and salary levels.

The general median wage requirement for the AEVW was removed in March 2025; however, several immigration settings remain indexed to the median wage, causing increases in certain wage requirements.
Looking ahead
The median wage rate, which is based on Stats NZ data (usually from the June quarter), may change each year. Typically, the new figure comes into force early in the year, commonly in February or March.
