Brazil Offshore Visa: Requirements, Eligibility and How to Apply

The Brazil offshore visa is a temporary visa created for foreign professionals working aboard offshore vessels or platforms operating in Brazilian territorial waters and it forms part of Brazil’s broader immigration framework.

This visa applies to individuals who are not employed by a Brazilian company and who provide services on foreign vessels or platforms for assignments lasting more than 90 days.

Below, we explain what the Brazil offshore visa is, who may be eligible, the key requirements and how the application process works.

What Is the Brazil Offshore Visa?

The Brazil offshore visa is a temporary visa for foreign professionals working aboard offshore vessels or platforms operating in Brazilian territorial waters.

It allows lawful entry and stay in Brazil and authorizes temporary residency for the duration of the offshore assignment, in line with Brazil’s offshore immigration regulations.

This visa is intended for specialized offshore activities and may apply to professionals such as:

      • Maritime professionals
      • Engineers
      • Technicians
      • Other professionals performing offshore services

Who Needs a Brazil Offshore Visa?

The Brazil offshore work visa may be required for foreign nationals who are:

      • Working aboard offshore vessels or platforms in Brazilian territorial waters
      • Not employed by a Brazilian company
      • Providing services on foreign vessels or platforms
      • Assigned for offshore work for more than 90 days

Short‑term offshore activities of up to 90 days may, in limited cases, fall under visitor status for certain technical activities, but longer or ongoing assignments generally require an offshore visa.

How Long Is a Brazil Offshore Visa Valid?

The Brazil offshore visa is granted for a defined period, typically for up to two years.

Depending on the circumstances, it may be renewed for an additional period.

Brazil Offshore Visa Eligibility

Eligibility for the Brazil offshore visa is limited to foreign nationals providing services aboard offshore vessels or platforms without an employment relationship with a Brazilian company.

The eligibility framework reflects regulatory updates implemented under Brazil’s offshore visa reforms for foreign professionals working in Brazilian territorial waters.

In all cases, a pre‑authorization of residency from the Ministry of Justice is required before the visa can be issued.

Brazil Offshore Visa Requirements

To apply for a Brazil offshore visa, applicants must submit several documents, including:

      • A police clearance certificate
      • An apostille, if applicable
      • A Charter Agreement
      • A Service Provision Agreement

Alternatively, another contract may be accepted if it clearly identifies:

      • The chartering company
      • The chartered entity
      • The vessel to be used

How to Apply for a Brazil Offshore Visa

The Brazil offshore visa application process begins with collecting the required documents and preparing the residency request.

1. Gather the required documents

All supporting documents must be collected and organized before submitting the application.

2. Submit the application

The residence authorization request is submitted to the Ministry of Justice for review.

3. Wait for approval

Once approved, the authorization is published and forwarded to the relevant Brazilian consulate.

4. Collect the visa

The applicant collects the offshore visa at the Brazilian consulate.

5. Travel to Brazil

After the visa is issued, the applicant may travel to Brazil to begin offshore activities.

6. Register with the Federal Police

Upon arrival in Brazil, registration with the Federal Police is required to comply with Brazil’s entry, stay and in‑country immigration requirements.

Common Challenges in the Brazil Offshore Visa Process

Although the application steps are clearly defined, missing documentation or minor errors can result in processing delays or refusal.

Careful preparation is important to reduce risks and help ensure a smooth Brazil offshore visa process.
