Germany Health Insurance Requirements for Visas and Residence Permits

Planning to move to Germany? Whether you are coming to study, work or join family, there is one thing you absolutely need: health insurance.

Germany requires all residents, including foreign nationals, to have valid health insurance. It is not just recommended, it is a legal requirement for obtaining a visa or a residence permit.

This guide explains Germany health insurance requirements for visas and immigration, including who it applies to, what type of coverage is needed and how to stay compliant.

Key Takeaways

      • Health insurance is required for visas and residence permits in Germany
      • The requirement applies to all residents, including foreign nationals
      • Travel insurance may be sufficient for short stays
      • Longer stays require coverage comparable to German statutory health insurance
      • Continuous coverage is essential to maintain legal residence

Who Needs Health Insurance in Germany

Health insurance is required for all residents in Germany.

This includes:

      • Students
      • Employees
      • Freelancers
      • Family members

Why Health Insurance Matters for Visas and Residence Permits

Proof of health insurance is required for all visa types, including:

      • Work visas
      • Study visas
      • Family reunification

Essentially, no insurance means no visa.

Health insurance is also required to maintain legal residence in Germany. If your coverage lapses, your immigration status may be at risk. For this reason, it is critical to remain continuously insured.

Family members can often be added to a primary policy, sometimes at little or no additional cost.

Germany Visa Health Insurance Requirements by Length of Stay

Health insurance requirements depend on how long you will stay in Germany.

Stays of up to 90 days

For short stays of up to 90 days, travel health insurance is usually sufficient.

Stays longer than 90 days

For longer stays, travel insurance is generally not enough.

You will need:

      • Health insurance that is comparable to German statutory health insurance

If you are using non-German insurance, you may be required to provide a form confirming that your coverage is comparable to German statutory health insurance.

This is a common reason for delays in the immigration process.

Types of Health Insurance in Germany

Germany generally offers two types of health insurance:

Statutory health insurance

      • Income-based
      • Covers most medical needs

Private health insurance

      • Typically used by high earners and freelancers
      • More flexible
      • Costs can vary

Health Insurance for Employees Moving to Germany

For local hires, employees in Germany are generally automatically enrolled in statutory health insurance once they start their job.

However, applicants will still need travel health insurance to cover the period between travel and the start of employment.

What Proof of Health Insurance Is Required

When applying for a visa, your health insurance certificate must include:

      • Name of the applicant
      • Date of birth
      • Start and end date of coverage
      • Scope of coverage

Incomplete or unclear documentation can delay the immigration process.

How to Choose the Right Health Insurance Plan

When selecting a health insurance plan, consider:

      • Your visa type
      • Your income level
      • Your length of stay

If you are unsure which option is right for you, consider speaking with a licensed advisor.

What This Means for Your Move to Germany

Health insurance is a key requirement for immigration to Germany. It directly impacts your ability to obtain a visa and maintain legal residence.

Understanding which type of coverage you need and ensuring that your insurance remains valid throughout your stay can help prevent delays and support a smoother immigration process.

If you are planning your move to Germany, make sure your health insurance is in place before starting your application.
