Public Policy Exchange webinar: The Future of UK Immigration
January 10, 2023 | 9:30 AM — 1:00 PM GMT
Fragomen Partner, Julia Onslow-Cole, will be speaking at The Future of UK Immigration webinar hosted by Public Policy Exchange on 10th January. Julia will discuss the ways to create an effective immigration policy in the U.K. to address shortages and skills gaps.
Event overview:
This symposium offers immigration officials, charities, local authorities, employers, and other key stakeholders the opportunity to develop strategies to navigate the complexities of the new immigration system, and to discuss whether the government’s radical overhaul of the immigration system will succeed in its aim to take back control, spur economic growth and raise living standards.
Programme:
- Discuss the economic and labour-market impact of the ending of free of movement and its replacement with a points-based immigration system for all people wishing to move to the UK for work
- Examine the implications for businesses of the new immigration system, and how they can approach it to ensure that they are able to access the skilled workforce that they require
- Assess strategies for ensuring businesses and the public sector are able to attract and bring in talent from abroad to address the UK’s widening skills gap and meet the needs of key sectors with growing vacancy lists
- Learn how the UK can make itself an attractive place for the recruitment and retention of talented immigrants
- Discuss how new technology and IT systems can make the UK’s immigration system more efficient and effective and assess progress in this area
- Examine which sectors are particularly in need of visa liberalisation and how these sectors can be made more attractive to foreign workers and the immigration system can be made to work better for employers in these sectors
- Explore how to make the immigration system more widely understood by civil servants, businesses sponsoring visa applications and applicants
- Analyse the new immigration system and its role in reducing illegal entries into the UK
- Discuss what the new immigration might mean for the exploitation of migrant workers by rogue employers
