Balancing precision and creativity, Michelle offers clients immigration solutions that are perfectly calibrated to their needs and objectives.

She represents clients of every size, hailing from every stage in the corporate lifecycle—startups, multinationals, companies in emerging markets and Fortune 500 enterprises. She especially enjoys helping startups and entrepreneurs grow and flourish.

Michelle creates—or reinvents—programs and policies based on the client’s business objectives, workforce size, risk tolerance and cultural profile. Institutional clients value her methodical, thorough approach to program design, while younger, more nimble companies praise her for novel approaches and perspectives.

Her work embraces industries with well-worn, established immigration processes as well as sectors with highly specialized, idiosyncratic regulations and constraints—for example, medical institutions and organizations as they grapple with unprecedented shortages of talent.

In addition to building and maintaining immigration programs, Michelle excels as a strategic advisor; she prefers to help clients avoid potential problems rather than fixing them after the fact. Her skills are especially helpful in the interim before major acquisitions, partnerships and other transactions; she helps clients perform a thorough compliance analysis to inform due diligence prior to the completion of a deal, understand which decisions they need to make to maintain operations and assess the risks and rewards of transactions generally.

This strategic role is built on over two decades of creative, collaborative and collegial relationships with c-suite executives and other leadership figures.

Public Service

Michelle has long served the legal community and the larger communities it represents—a commitment inspired by her passion for a rational, humane and fair immigration system.

She currently serves as the chair of the American Bar Association’s Commission on Immigration. In this role, she provides critical counsel to the Commission in its efforts to ensure fair treatment and full due process rights for immigrants and refugees within the United States, helps to develop and implement immigration-related policy for the ABA, and is a voice respected by government entities grappling with immigration issues, including the White House, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the Executive Office for Immigration Review and Capitol Hill.

Michelle also serves as Secretary/Operations Officer for the American Bar Association’s International Law Section. She was appointed to Vice Chair of the Board of Directors for the Chinese American Service League, an organization that has long dedicated its efforts to serving the Chicago community with essential social services, including providing immigrants with pathways to citizenship.

A strong advocate for pro bono work, Michelle assists with asylum, Temporary Protected Status (TPS), Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and Violence Against Women Act cases through the ABA and other nationally recognized pro bono organizations. She routinely assists with TPS, DACA and citizenship workshops. She has routinely provided pro bono legal services to immigrant adults and children detained at the southern border in Texas and California.

See the “publications and lectures” section below for a sample of Michelle’s many contributions to well-regarded legal and business publications. She speaks English, French and Spanish.
