About India
Whether you’re looking to visit, live or work in India—we can support your immigration needs at every stage of your journey.
If you’re a foreign national looking to visit, live, and/or work in India, several options are available.
- Business Visits: As a business visitor, you'll generally need to secure a Business "B" Visa from an Indian consular post before you travel. This visa is generally issued for six months to five years (or up to 10 years for citizens of Canada, Japan, United Kingdom, and United States) and permits a maximum stay of six months, with multiple entries. Depending on your citizenship, you may also be eligible for an e-Visa, which is valid for 365 days from the date of issuance of an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) and allows multiple entries. You'll need to apply for an ETA online at least four days before you arrive in India. Generally, a business visitor's stay (whether a "B" Visa or e-Visa) must not exceed three to four weeks, or work authorization may be required.
- Work Authorization: The main work authorization category is the Employment Visa, which is split into subcategories based on the purpose of the visit. In particular, the Project (E-4) Visa is a narrowly tailored subcategory of the Employment Visa issued to foreign nationals traveling to India to work on projects in the power and steel sectors. The E-4 visa validity period is granted in line with the duration of the project/contract and determined by the issuing consular post. Employment Visas permit work for up to one year, though they are generally granted for three months to one year. Extensions are available for all permit types, with a maximum stay of ten years.
- Internships/Traineeships: The S6 visa may be an option for those looking to do internships as part of their educational curriculum.
- Self-employment: If you're an investor or entrepreneur, you may qualify for Permanent Residency Status (PRS).
If you’re traveling from India to study abroad, Fragomen can guide you throughout the visa application process. Once you have confirmation of enrollment from your preferred institution, we can assist you with general assessments, consultations regarding visa eligibility and procedures, or a comprehensive guidance package that includes visa application package preparation and review, guidance in Statement of Purpose (SOP), evaluating disbursement documents, scheduling visa appointments, and filing visa applications. The scope of services varies based on the destination country of your institution.
Fragomen can also consult on citizenship matters and, as permitted within the confines of local law, may be able to offer citizenship assistance.
Fragomen in India is Fragomen Immigration Services India (Pvt) Ltd., operating exclusively as an immigration consultancy and not as a law firm in India.
