EU Registration Applicants Must Visit Service Center to Submit and Collect Certificates
March 18, 2019
The situation
Further to the announcement that a different government agency – the Danish Agency of International Recruitment and Integration (SIRI) – has started processing EU registration applications, the government has released additional information about the process. EU registration applicants are impacted by a new in-person process.
A closer look
- New in-person process. As a result of the administrative change, EU registration applicants can no longer use an online system to submit their applications. Instead, applicants must visit the appropriate government office, depending on when their registration certificate (which is issued at the end of the registration process) will be issued:
- Certificates to be issued by March 29. EU registration applicants whose registration certificate is issued by March 29, 2019 can collect their certificate in person at a Danish State Administration office, as was done in the past.
- Certificates to be issued after March 29. All other applicants must submit and collect their EU registration in person at a new Citizen Center, located in Aabenraa, Aarhus, Aalborg, Copenhagen, Odense. These Citizen Centers operate on an online appointment system
- Unaffected categories. The Danish Immigration Service, which handles applications for family reunification, Schengen visas, permanent residence and asylum, is not part of the merge and applications submitted to this agency are unaffected by this change.
Impact
- Principal applicants. EU registration applicants are now subject to a new administrative burden to submit their application and collect their certificate. Fragomen can assist with the submission process.
- Dependents. Dependents may not be able to schedule appointments at the same day as the principal applicant, which may necessitate two visits and may delay the permit issuance date, which may delay school and doctor registration for children.
Background
EU registration is the main immigration formality required for non-exempt EU/European Economic Area/Swiss nationals staying in Denmark for over 90 days.
Looking ahead
The Danish government is developing a new online application system for EU nationals that will merge processes of the two government agencies handling immigration applications (the Danish State Administration and SIRI). Fragomen will report on relevant developments.
