Fragomen Releases 2023 Worldwide Immigration Trends Report
Finds Countries Renewing Focus on Economies While Fighting Over Global Talent
January 10, 2023
NEW YORK, January 10, 2023 – Fragomen, the world’s leading provider of immigration services, today released its annual Worldwide Immigration Trends Report. The report analyzes evolving political, economic and cultural trends to track the key drivers and themes of immigration policy.
Each year, Fragomen’s Knowledge Group leverages the firm’s unparalleled expertise and reach to develop the Worldwide Immigration Trends Report, helping the employer community better understand and meet current and emerging immigration trends. The firm also supplements the report quarterly, offering updated insights into newly breaking trends and happenings.
“The abrupt transition to remote and hybrid work brought about by the pandemic highlighted not only the challenges of quickly upended norms, but also the resilience of today’s global workforce,” says Scott Leeb, Chief Knowledge Officer, Fragomen. “Our latest report will once again help corporate talent strategists anticipate the twists of the year ahead and compete for the best global talent in a tight market.”
Highlights of the report include:
The waning of restrictive policies and countries’ new focus on economic sustainability. Though some countries hold to restrictive immigration policies in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, most have drastically eased travel restrictions as countries shift focus onto their economies.
The economic downturn and its impact on immigration policy. Rising costs associated with inflation could impact employers’ immigration strategy decisions as they factor in rising housing and other costs of living, government filing fees, and salary levels. Employers will continue to look to remote and hybrid work policies to mitigate expenses associated with sending workers to expensive metro areas.
The war in Ukraine and its impacts on immigration policy. Countries are continuing to develop and amend visa and entry restrictions regarding Russian citizens and will likely focus on regulating entry rather than cancelling the status of those already admitted. Of note, unlike in other refugee crises, Ukrainians are returning home in large numbers, thus making themselves ineligible for certain residence and other immigration concessions from their European neighbors.
The all-time high global competition for talent and focus on technology skills. Unemployment rates remain low in many countries, and jobs are going unfilled at record levels – creating massive worker and skills gaps. Countries will continue seeking immigration policy innovations in response, creating new pathways and jobseeker visa programs, as well as fusing the tourist and business classifications, in an attempt to attract skilled workers.
The continuing digital transformation. Governments are eager to digitize immigration systems. This means not only greater user ease, but also improved monitoring capabilities and a renewed emphasis on the need for employers and travelers to maintain the most careful compliance practices. Countries will continue to embrace digital nomad visa programs, deftly adapting to a changing legal and regulatory environment while seeking programs that appeal to employer and employee alike.
