Indonesia: Relaxed Rules for Extensions and Other Applications; In-Person Visit Now Required for Some Visit Extensions
May 13, 2025

The Indonesian government has updated the rules on visit stay permit extensions.
- First, two extensions of 60 days each are now permitted, allowing for a continuous stay of up to 180 days without the need to exit Indonesia. Previously, holders of multiple-entry visit visas were allowed to stay in Indonesia for up to 60 days per entry, after which they had to leave and re-enter the country. Although the allowable duration of stay per visit has been extended, the multiple-entry visa itself remains valid for only one year from the date of issuance.
- For certain categories of permitted activities, the extension process may now require the physical presence of the foreign national at the local immigration office. This may involve interviews, verification of submitted documents, and biometric procedures, especially if there are discrepancies or inconsistencies in the documentation. Examples of the impacted category of activities include foreign worker trials, internships, pre-investment visits, business activities, installation and repair of machinery, after-sales service, audits, quality control inspections, attendance at lectures or seminars, and participation in comparative studies, short courses, or training. For visa extensions related to other activities, such as tourism or family visits, an in-person visit may not be needed, subject to the discretion and approval of the local immigration office.
