Canada Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP): What International Students Need to Know
If you're an international student graduating from a Canadian institution, the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) can be a crucial step toward building your future in Canada. In this guide, we break down everything you need to know about the PGWP, including eligibility, how to apply, permit length, and how it supports your path to permanent residence.
What is the Canada Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)?
The Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) is an open work permit that allows international graduates of eligible Canadian institutions to work in Canada after completing their studies. The PGWP is not employer-specific, which means you can work for any employer, anywhere in Canada.
Who Is Eligible for a PGWP?
To qualify for a post-graduation work permit in Canada, you must:
-
-
- Graduate from a designated learning institution (DLI) that is PGWP-eligible.
-
-
-
- Maintain full-time student status throughout each academic semester (some exceptions apply).
-
-
-
- Complete at least 50% of your program in person in Canada.
-
-
-
- Provide proof of graduation, such as official transcripts or a completion letter.
-
-
-
- Apply within 180 days of graduating, and your study permit must have been valid at some point during those 180 days.
-
Exceptions and Special Circumstances
Some exceptions may apply if:
-
-
- You completed an accelerated program.
-
-
-
- You participated in distance learning or studied overseas for credit.
-
-
-
- You took an authorized leave of up to 150 days.
-
-
-
- You transferred between DLIs.
-
-
-
- You graduated from certain institutions in Quebec.
-
Language Requirements
PGWP applicants must demonstrate language proficiency through a recognized test:
-
-
- University graduates: Minimum CLB/NCLC 7 in English or French.
-
-
-
- College graduates: Minimum CLB/NCLC 5 in English or French.
-
How Long is the PGWP Valid?
The duration of your PGWP depends on the length of your study program and the validity of your passport:
-
-
- Less than 8 months: Not eligible for PGWP.
-
-
-
- 8 months to less than 2 years: PGWP issued for the same duration as your program.
-
-
-
- 2 years or more: May be eligible for a 3-year PGWP.
-
-
-
- If your passport expires before the eligible PGWP duration, your permit will be shortened to match. You may apply for a new PGWP after renewing your passport to recapture lost time.
-
If you completed multiple eligible programs, each at least 8 months long, you may be issued a PGWP that combines the total length.
When Can You Start Working?
If you apply for the PGWP before your study permit expires, you may start working full-time while your application is being processed. However:
-
-
- If your PGWP is refused, you must stop working immediately.
-
-
-
- The PGWP cannot be extended, so if it expires, you'll need to apply for another work permit type or permanent residence.
-
How Does a PGWP Help You Get Permanent Residence (PR)?
A PGWP allows you to gain Canadian work experience, which can earn points toward Express Entry and other PR programs. However:
-
-
- The PGWP is an open work permit, so it does not count as arranged employment in Express Entry.
-
-
-
- Your job’s occupational code (NOC) will impact how many points you receive.
-
Can Your Spouse Apply for a Work Permit?
Yes, your spouse or partner may be eligible for an open work permit if:
-
-
- You, the PGWP holder, work in a TEER 0 or 1 occupation (managerial or professional level).
-
-
-
- Your PGWP is valid for at least 16 months.
-
-
-
- Your passport is valid long enough to meet the 16-month requirement. Otherwise, your spouse’s application may be refused.
-
Final Tips for a Smooth PGWP Application
-
-
- Apply as soon as you receive your official transcript or confirmation of graduation.
-
-
-
- Check that your passport is valid for as long as possible.
-
-
-
- Keep records of your full-time status, DLI eligibility and authorized leaves.
-
-
-
- Understand how your work experience on a PGWP can align with your long-term immigration goals, such as Express Entry or provincial nominee programs.
