In this Mobility Minute, Associate Jonas auf dem Kampe discusses the recent reforms to the German citizenship law enacted in June 2024.

The new law introduces several key changes. Notably, the minimum residency requirement for eligibility has been reduced from eight to five years. Additionally, the revised law acknowledges, from the perspective of German citizenship law, dual and multiple citizenship, allowing individuals to obtain and retain other nationalities alongside German citizenship from a legal perspective.

For additional information on the specifics of these reforms, including both the simplifications and the stricter provisions introduced by the new law, please refer to our previous blogs:

      • Reform of the German Nationality Act Part 1: Advantages of German Citizenship and the Reduced Waiting Period for Naturalization
      • Reform of the German Nationality Act Part 2: Admission of Dual and Multiple Citizenship
