Alia is an Associate at Fragomen’s Toronto office, where she assists multinational companies, Canadian entities, and individuals in a variety of industries, ranging from entertainment, finance, information, infrastructure, manufacturing, natural resources, technology, and transportation, with temporary residence status. She works closely with clients to determine what is best for their business and the most practical and effective method to bring international talent to Canada in a timely and compliant manner. Alia has experience with business visitor, CUSMA and other free trade agreements, the Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) process, LMIA-exempt work permits such as intra-company transfers, C10, C20 and C16, and employer compliance inspections.

Prior to joining Fragomen, Alia ran her own immigration and refugee law practice in association with a boutique law firm. She was a member of Legal Aid Ontario’s Refugee and Domestic Violence panels and represented clients in all forms of immigration and refugee applications and proceedings. She handled complex cases, including family reunification, inadmissibility, human trafficking and domestic violence, and regularly appeared before all levels of the Immigration and Refugee Board and the Federal Court. Before returning to private practice in 2017, Alia was the Director, Opera Division and In-House Counsel for a prominent Toronto talent agency, where she regularly engaged with talent and producers across North America, Europe and Asia.

Alia has had the privilege of sitting on several boards and committees, most recently the Refugee Lawyers Association Executive Board (2018-2020), the Canadian Opera Company's Vox Committee (2018-2020) and the Ontario Bar Association’s Law Practice Management Executive Committee (2018-2019). She is a 3-time Chair of Opera Canada Magazine's annual Ruby Awards fundraising committee and was a member of the board from 2011-2019.
