About Hungary
Whether you’re looking to visit, live or work in Hungary—we can support your immigration needs at every stage of your journey.
Hungary is a member of the European Union and the Schengen Area. If you’re a foreign national looking to visit, live and/or work in Hungary, several options are available.
- Business Visits: As a business visitor and depending on your citizenship, you'll generally enter Hungary without a visa or you'll need to secure a Schengen C Visa from a Hungarian consular post before your travel. For all visitors, the Schengen Area limits stays to 90 days in a 180-day period.
- Work Authorization: Hungary has a Single Permit for work and residence authorization with varying processes and requirements depending on the nature of your work. The Single Permit for Local Hire is suitable for foreign workers on a local contract and generally requires labour market testing. The EU Intracompany Transferee (ICT) Permit is suitable for intracompany transfers of managers, specialists, and trainees. The Single Permit for Assignment/Secondment and the EU Blue Card are available but rarely used in practice. Permit validity and renewal options vary per category.
- Internships/Traineeships: If you are traveling to Hungary to train at a local entity that is part of your home employer's corporate group, you can apply for a one-year EU Intra-Company Transferee (ICT) Permit. To qualify, you will need to have a relevant degree and three to six months of continuous prior employment with your home employer.
- Self-sponsored: There is a program dedicated to potential investors or entrepreneurs in Hungary, the Guest Investor Permit. If you're a digital nomad looking to reside in Hungary while working for a foreign employer or foreign clients, the one-year White Card may be suitable for you. You must be employed abroad or must own a company registered abroad and prove you can continue your activities abroad through information technology channels, and have access to sufficient funds.
Alternatively, you can apply for a six-month residence under "other purposes," a general miscellaneous permit suitable to stay with relatives or learn Hungarian, among others. You'll need to show suitable accommodation, health insurance, sufficient funds, and motivation to stay.
Fragomen can also consult on citizenship matters and, as permitted within the confines of local law, may be able to offer citizenship assistance.
