Nigeria is a member of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). If you’re a foreign national looking to visit, live, and/or work in Nigeria, several options are available.
- Business Visits: As a business visitor, you'll generally need to apply for a business visa (multiple or single entry) with a Nigerian consular post before you travel. Business visas typically permit a stay of up to 90 days; they can be extended in country for an additional 30 to 90 days, at the authorities' discretion. If you're a citizen of a non-ECOWAS member country, you'll need to seek an extension for any stay of 56 cumulative days or more in a 12-month period.
- Work Authorization: Depending on your intended length of stay/work, the main work authorization categories are (1) the Combined Expatriate Residence Permit and Aliens Card (CERPAC); and (2) the Temporary Work Permit (TWP). Note that work authorization options differ if you're a citizen of an ECOWAS member country.
- Internships/Traineeships: If you're traveling to Nigeria for training, the Intern Visa may be an option. It is issued for 12 months and is non-renewable.
- Self-employment: If you're looking to invest in Nigeria, the Investor Visa is generally granted for five years. To qualify, you must provide proof of capital investment in Nigeria; the required amount is determined by the size of the company (small to ultra-large), with a set investment amount for companies in the oil and gas industry.
