The government of Bermuda has published a law that changes the maximum period of stay in Bermuda for visitors to 180 cumulative days in a 12-month period, effective immediately. Previously, the maximum allowable stay for visitors was 180 cumulative days in a calendar year. According to the Department of Immigration, the measure is retroactive; visitors who have reached or exceeded the 180-day limit in the last 12 months and remained in Bermuda as of January 15, 2024 must depart the country and may be unable to return for six months. Visitors may be able to apply to the Department of Immigration to extend their stay and should consult with their immigration professional for case-specific advice. As a reminder, foreign nationals seeking to conduct allowable business activities in Bermuda (who are considered business visitors per immigration law in Bermuda) should limit their stay to 21 consecutive days per visit. Those seeking to stay longer, or seeking to work in Bermuda for any period, may require a work permit and should consult with their immigration professional for case-specific advice.
