The UK’s Domestic Worker Visa, which was introduced in 2002, allows foreign and British employers abroad to bring staff for temporary stays. However, this visa comes with strict conditions, including full-time employment in the employer’s UK household and adherence to the UK’s minimum wage.
Other European countries like France, Italy, Spain and Portugal also have restrictive regulations for domestic workers, involving complex permit requirements which can pose difficulties for high-net-worth households looking to employ domestic staff for extended periods.
Zarmina recommends employers seek legal advice, establish formal contracts and ensure proper documentation of their employees' immigration statuses before travelling to the UK to remain compliant.
