About Gambia

Whether your company is sending employees to The Gambia or expanding your worldwide footprint—Fragomen is here to help. Our experienced immigration professionals partner with businesses of all sizes to develop immigration strategies that can help you achieve your goals.

  • The Gambia’s immigration laws provide limited options for employers of foreign nationals. The Gambia is a member of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), which allows the free movement of goods and persons among ECOWAS foreign nationals. Requirements, processing times, employment eligibility, and benefits for accompanying family members vary by permit type.
  • The Gambia does not have a dedicated visa category for business travelers. Depending on their nationality, foreign nationals may enter the country either on an Entry Visa (applied for in advance) or under a visa waiver program to carry out permissible business activities. Entry Visas must be obtained from the nearest Gambian embassy or consulate, with typical processing times ranging from one to two weeks. Foreign nationals entering on an Entry Visa or under a visa waiver must obtain prior approval from the Director General of Immigration to engage in any form of employment or professional activity. Alternatively, some foreign nationals may be eligible for a Visa on Arrival (VoA) at the port of entry; however, issuance is discretionary and not guaranteed. In certain cases, the sponsoring company (e.g., an employer) may be required to submit a Request for Entry Clearance to the Gambian Immigration Department prior to the traveler’s arrival. Non-ECOWAS nationals are required to apply for an Alien ID Card upon arrival.
  • The most common type of work authorization in The Gambia is Permit B (a combined Work and Residence Permit), issued by the Department of Immigration. It is required for formal employment, whether for skilled or unskilled labor. There are no restrictions on the type of work that can be undertaken under Permit B.
  • VoA is highly discretionary and not guaranteed.

Fragomen can also consult on citizenship matters and, as permitted within the confines of local law, may be able to offer citizenship assistance.
