About Burundi

Whether your company is sending employees to Burundi or expanding your worldwide footprint—Fragomen is here to help. Our experienced immigration professionals partner with businesses of all sizes to develop immigration strategies that can help you achieve your goals.

  • Foreign nationals require an ordinary visa to conduct business activities in Burundi, unless exempt by treaty or other agreement. Ordinary visas are generally valid from one month up to two years, depending on the purpose/duration of the visit and the work contract term.
  • Foreign nationals can obtain visas, including Entry Ordinary Visas, valid for up to three months; Establishment Ordinary Visas (requires 6 months of residence before applying and includes dependents), valid for up to two years; and Exit and Return visas, valid for one month up to seven months.
  • Under an employment contract, foreign nationals must apply for a work permit in Burundi. Work permits are generally issued for two years and must be renewed one month before their expiry date. The Burundian company may be required to meet certain conditions for the grant of work permit extensions to its foreign employees, including training of local employees. Work permits may also be issued to investors, spouses of Burundian citizens, or East African Community citizens with ties to Burundi.
