About Greenland

Whether your company is sending employees to Greenland or expanding your worldwide footprint—Fragomen is here to help. Our experienced immigration professionals partner with businesses of all sizes to develop immigration strategies that can help you achieve your goals.

  • While Greenland is a part of the Kingdom of Denmark, it has an immigration system, separate from Denmark, the European Union (EU), and the Schengen Area. Nationals of Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden) can live and work in Greenland without a permit. All other foreign nationals, including EU/EEA citizens, must obtain both a residence and work permit prior to employment. Permit requirements, processing times, and benefits for accompanying family members vary by permit type and applicant background.
  • A few limited exemptions exist (e.g., official government delegations or short technical visits), but most foreign nationals must obtain authorization before traveling.
  • Visa-free nationals can enter Greenland and stay for 90 days within 180 days. Visa nationals must obtain a Greenlandic visa. A visa to enter Denmark or another Schengen country is not valid for entry into Greenland as Greenland is not a member of the EU nor part of the Schengen Area. However, most travelers will need a Schengen visa, since most travel to Greenland goes through a Schengen country, such as Denmark.
  • The main work authorization categories in Greenland include the Standard Work and Residence Permit, issued to individuals with a concrete job offer; Internship Permits, for students and trainees; and Short-Term Work Permits, for temporary assignments. All permits are job- and employer-specific, and salary and working conditions must meet local labor standards. Applications are processed by the Danish Immigration Service on behalf of Greenlandic authorities.

Fragomen can also consult on citizenship matters and, as permitted within the confines of local law, may be able to offer citizenship assistance.
